The Rules Guru Speaks
Did you read about the recent Rules of Golf changes in the paper? The USGA and the R&A announced changes to the Rules on Monday, October 24th.
The principle change affects play after the ball is addressed (stance taken and club grounded, or stance taken in a hazard). It will no longer be a penalty if a ball moves through no fault of the player after address. In the past few years, a number of players were penalized when their ball was moved by windy conditions after they had addressed it. Now, with this new change, the player will receive no penalty unless the player was the cause of the movement. The ball will be played from its new position.
This change parallels one made a few years ago when the USGA and R&A rescinded the penalty for a ball moving when a loose impediment within one club length of your ball was moved. The current requirement for penalty is that the player must be deemed to have caused the ball to have moved.
Another significant change concerns raking or smoothing bunkers. The new ruling allows players to rake or smooth sand in bunkers at any time, even before playing a shot from the sand as long as the lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play is not altered and the raking is solely for the purpose of caring for the course.
This follows an incident with Stewart Cink a year or so ago when his caddie raked a fairway bunker that Stewart stood in to hit his ball lying outside of the hazard. Cink's shot from that position ended up in a greenside bunker and the existing rule prohibited testing the condition of that bunker or any similar bunker. Therefore, Cink was penalized. Within a week, the USGA and R&A issued a ruling to allow raking a bunker in that situation for the purpose of caring for the course and maintaining pace of play.
You aren't playing golf if you don't know the rules.

Local Win at Winn-Dixie Nationwide Tour event
What a great weekend of Golf at the TPC Valley Course that hosted the Nationwide Tour event !! I had a chance to get out to the course Sunday morning and the weather and the course were outstanding --- Congratulations to Gavin Coles from Bathurst, Australia for a great victory with Jacksonville Beach resident Mike Carrick on his bag - Mike is a Tour veteran and a good friend of David Gates Golf Headquarters. Nice check Mike, and with Gavin Coles getting his PGA Tour card back, we hope he keeps you on the bag on the big Tour next year! Congrats to you both!
Freedom Fridays
Golfers, hopefully you've heard about and support Freedom Fridays. We at David Gates Golf Headquarters support this initiative, started by Jack Aschenbach at Amelia National, to give back to our troops and their families. Jack, with the help of the North Florida Chapter PGA, sold red Freedom Friday shirts to members of the chapter and local area golfers, to be worn each Friday. The proceeds from these shirts went to the Folds of Honor program which supports families of wounded and fallen soldiers. To date, they have raised more than $22,000 through the shirt sales and other special events.
On Friday, November 11th, Jack is holding a tournament at Amelia National for Veterans Day. Part of the proceeds from this event will go to the Folds of Honor program. If you can't participate in this tournament, then play at your course of choice and wear a red shirt. The plan is to create a Sea of Red across the First Coast to show our support to our fighting men and women. Get the word out to the golfers in your groups so that we can make this happen.
